When Samsung Camera held their first #DitchtheDSLR Day this in Times Square this past June, it’s not surprising that people turned out in droves, excited to trade in their bulky DSLRs for award-winning NX30. Now Samsung is coming to LA to give West Coasters a chance to ditch their DSLRs on Tuesday, October 14 with a star-studded event where Nick Cannon and Julianne Hough will be in attendance to help set a new Selfie World Record. Once the Guinness World Record is set, Samsung will donate $50,000 to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles.
A chance to ditch your bulky DSLR. A chance to be a part of history. A chance to contribute to a worthwhile cause just by showing up. If you live in the LA area, you definitely need to attend this event. Full information about the event is at the end of the post.
As technology advances and cameras become smaller and lighter, many continue to carry around large outdated DSLR cameras or use smartphone cameras for convenience never asking if there’s something better on the market. The answer is yes.

Samsung NXMini Love
But I realize it can be hard to make the jump and commit to spending money on a system you’re not quite sure about. Years ago I was shopping for a DSLR that would take me beyond the point-and-shoot but I was hesitant. Besides all of the fabulous tech specs that friends said would produce amazing images, their large, heavy bodies felt awkward in my hands. I was on the fence, not quite ready to make the jump and then I was introduced to mirrorless cameras.
According to Richard Baguley’s Best Mirrorless Camera 2014 in Tom’s Guide:
“A mirrorless camera offers the best of both worlds: a smaller size closer to that of a point-and-shoot, with the large sensor and interchangeable lens flexibility of a DSLR. That’s why mirrorless cameras are one of the main growth areas for innovation in the camera industry, with new models frequently upping the ante for what these cameras can do.”
I’ve been shooting with Samsung mirrorless gear for almost a year now and feel like I’ve found the system that was meant for me. My collection includes the NX30, NX300, NX3000, and NXMini – a nice range of cameras in various price points. Here’s a bit about each camera and a photo taken with each. I’m also happy to answer more questions about the individual cameras if you leave them for me in the comments.

Wild Asseateague Pony Closeup, Assateague, Maryland taken with the NX30
NX30 ($799 on Amazon) is my first choice for days where I know I’ll be taking a lot of pictures. It’s perfect for capturing the action for my kids’ sporting events or taking with me on trips. I find that it’s the most ergonomic, allowing me to use it throughout an entire soccer game without hand fatigue, even with a 50-200 mm lens attached. It was a great travel companion during last May’s trip to Haiti!

Beautiful Bounty of Berries taken with the NXMini
The NXMini (starting at $377 on Amazon) is always in my bag, easy to pull out and take photos discretely. It fits nicely in a clutch for a night out and comes in five fashionable colors. If you’re selfie snapper, just flip up the screen and smile or wink and the NXMini snaps your photo, a feature that earned it the designation of “the ultimate selfie camera” by Mashable.

Spiral Stairs inside Assateague Lighthouse taken with the NX3000
The NX3000 ($449 on Amazon) is the newest camera in my collection and it’s power zoom lens makes it a great camera to start as you start to build your confidence and collection of lenses. I took it on a late summer trip to Chincoteague and Assateague and share photos that captured the attention of the sales manager of the property where we stayed who reached out for social media advice for their Instagram page!

DC Ice Storm taken with the NX3000
The NX300 ($485 on Amazon) was my first Samsung mirrorless love that allowed me to fall in love with the technology behind Samsung cameras. Great photos like this made me realize that you don’t need a bulky DSLR to capture stunning images.

Which one would you recommend for the perfect camera for everything? From action shots to family vacation photos and product photography? I’ve wanted a dslr but the cost I could never come up with especially when my phone takes amazing photos.
Hi! If price is a factor, I’d recommend the NX300 or NX3000. For the price, you’re getting great quality cameras and a fabulous kit lens to start. The big difference between the two is that the NX3000 has an electronic zoom, like a point and shoot. If you want to get used to adjusting your lens manually, I’d go with the NX300. Both take phenomenal photos are are quite compact and easy to hold.
Click around on Amazon to view the different colors because sometimes certain colors are less than others. I hope that helps! Please feel free to email or comment again if you have any additional questions!
