Every summer we like a little external motivation and one of our favorite programs is the . For the past 9 years, this free online reading program has encouraged kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out to avoid the dreaded summer slide.
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” powered by Energizer ® and as part of the challenge, we were issued a photo challenge for the month of July. We received three packs of goodies to open on different weeks throughout the month to encourage us to go on reading adventures with our Energizer Bunny as we chronicled our summer reading adventures on Instagram.
This month we spent a lot of time reading outside. In between the hot and steamy days that characters Washington, D.C. in the summer, we had some glorious days that reminded me of the San Francisco Bay Area where I grew up. Cool mornings and no humidity were perfect for outdoor reading!
On days where it was almost too quiet in the house, I knew I could find the kids outside reading in the afternoon shade on our front porch. Dav Pilkey books are a favorite and one day I found him with a book from the Ricky Ricotta Mighty Robot series.
Reading a bit each morning helps my kids keep up with #summerreading work sent home by school. Today the Energizer Bunny wanted to listen to Ricky Ricotta, a favorite @scholasticinc book! #ad A photo posted by Leticia Barr (@techsavvymama) on
There were days where we read indoors but dreamt about adventures thanks to what we were reading. The kids dug into the The Magic School Bus Jumping into Electricity field trip kit that came and had fun talking about where they would want to go with Mrs. Frizzle as they read about electricity before cooperating to do the kit’s activities.
One night before bed, our youngest must have wanted go to bed with sweet dreams of the beach because I found him on the couch under a blanket with Elisha Cooper’s beautiful book, Beach.
Last night he made himself a cozy spot after dive practice to do some reading before bed! I hope he had sweet dreams about the beach! @scholasticinc #summerreading #ad #latergram A photo posted by Leticia Barr (@techsavvymama) on
This past week the kids were up early and home late with long days at their favorite camp but each morning they’d grab a book and head out to the front porch to read as they waited for carpool.
Introducing Monday Minutes
In an effort to log as many minutes as possible through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge and to break the world record for summer reading, Scholastic is setting special weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday we’ll be announcing a #MondayMinutesGoal, the number of minutes for kids to read together in one week (by the following Monday).
Whether your child or student is reading independently aloud or together with you, let’s share their success and keep the momentum going! Here’s how:
- Have your child log his/her minutes on the SRC website or on a paper log/piece of paper
- Take a picture of him/her proudly displaying their minutes
- Share it on social using #MondayMinutesGoal and #SummerReading!

My children love to read on the back deck.
On my back porch because it’s just really relaxing.
We like to read in the back yard.
I teach 5th grade and Hugo is one of my favorite books also. If you ever get the chance, pick up the audio recording of this book. It goes so well with this book.
I don’t currently have one, but some of my very favorite memories involve slowly swinging in a hammock while reading a great book!
In the backyard on a blanket. It’s so relaxing!
Curled up on the couch because it’s cooler and comfy
