9 Ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day

May 2, 2024 By Leticia

May the Fourth is a day for fans of all ages to celebrate Star Wars Day together. While this day is not officially recognized by Lucasfilm, fans celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4th because of the iconic phrase, “May the force be with you.”

9 Ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day

Whether you have young Padawans who aren’t old enough for Star Wars quite yet or have passed on a love of the films you grew up with to your own kids, there are many ways you can celebrate Star Wars Day as a family. You can go all out with a full day of Star Wars, plan for a family movie night, or find some middle ground. And if you haven’t thought about Saturday being May 4th, here are 9 ways you can celebrate Star Wars Day. May the Fourth be with you!

Make a Star Wars Themed Breakfast

Don a Star Wars apron (choose Chewbacca, R2D2, BB8 or Darth Vader & Stormtrooper) and engage your kids in some kitchen chemistry as you make some Millennium Falcon shaped waffles together.  The Deluxe Millenium Falcon Waffle Maker ($59.95 from Amazon) makes it easy.

If your family prefers pancakes, serve up Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, R2-D2 and Yoda in pancake form using these pancake molds, expertly turned by the Darth Vader Flex Turner spatula. Serve breakfast on Star Wars themed plates.

Caffeine lovers can also jump start the day with Corellian Iced Coffee using a Milennium Falcon mold from Amazon to make a coffee ice cube. There’s also a Stormtrooper one!

Find the Perfect Star Wars Book for Your Kid

The best way to motivate kids to read is to have them choose what they want to read. Brightly has an incredible list of Star Wars books called Read These, You Will: Star Wars Books for Every Kind of Kid that celebrates the different kinds of kids with different interests. There are books for kids too young to watch the movies, the DIY kid who loves going to local Maker Faires, super-fans who can’t get enough, a Shakespeare Star Wars for theatre lovers, books filled with facts, and more!

A love of Star Wars can spark a curiosity about space. For kids who want to learn beyond the planets, these new books for elementary ages cover comets, nebulas, black holes, asteroids, stardust, and astronauts who’ve traveled into space in age appropriate ways.

  • The Spaceman by Randy Cecil— Lovingly illustrated, this wry and gentle fantasy will speak to adults as well as children—and cast the familiar in an astonishing new light. (ages 3-7)
  • How to Spacewalk by Kathryn Sullivan and Michael J. Rosen— Aspiring astronauts will be ready for liftoff with this thrilling guide to preparing for and doing a real spacewalk with the first American woman to walk in space as their partner. (ages 7-9)
  • I’m a Black Hole by Eve M. Vavagiakis— Journey to the event horizon in this playful, mind-bending introduction to one of our universe’s most mysterious marvels—narrated by a black hole itself. (ages 7-9)
  • Cosmic Collisions: Asteroid vs Comet— By Dr. Marc J. Kuchner— What happens when two massive hunks of hurtling space debris slam into each other? Welcome to round one in the Cosmic Collisions series—an exciting children’s debut from an expert astrophysicist. (ages 7-9)
  • Clouds in Space: Nebulae, Stardust, and Us by Teresa Robeson— Real space science meets beautiful images in this lyrical nonfiction introduction to one of the most alluring wonders of our universe—the nebula. (ages 7-9)

Take a Star Wars Themed Class with Outschool

Learning is more fun when classes are Star Wars themed and Outschool has curated a collection of live, online Star Wars themed classes that are not only age appropriate but affordably priced. Here’s a look at some of the fun classes being offered through this weekend and beyond:

  • Star Wars Weekly Jedi Academy($6, for ages 4-9)— In this ongoing fitness course train using the light side with a Jedi, the dark side with a Storm trooper, use lightsabers, & battle your way to victory.
  • Drawing All Star Wars Heroes($18, for ages 7-12)— This class will join the fans of the Star Wars universe to come and draw all of the Star Wars heroes for their collections.
  • Star Wars Social Hour($15, for ages 10-15)— A conversation group to build confidence and comfort socializing with peers through a shared interest in a galaxy far, far away

Brush Up on Your Star Wars Characters

The Star Wars Databank is a treasure trove of information about every single Star Wars character. It’s a great way to increase your Star Wars trivia knowledge and motivate reluctant readers to read about their favorite characters.

Get Creative with Free Printables

Encourage your young Jedi to get creative thanks to Brightly. Their free StarWars Printables and Activities include coloring pages, finger puppets, matching activities, mazes, trivia, word searches, and even creative writing prompts. I love that there’s a wide range of activities for ages 2-12 and Brightly makes it easy to find ones perfect for your child’s age range and interests.

Bake Some Star Wars Themed Sweets

Later in the day, make and decorate some Star Wars cookies. I love this Star Wars cookie baking kit ($34.95) from Williams Sonoma that has everything you need for transforming your sugar cookie dough into Yoda, Darth Vader, BB-8, R2-D2, Stormtrooper, Millennium Falcon, Lightsaber and the Rebel Symbol.

I also love this cakelet pan ($39.95 from Williams Sonoma) that allows you to treat your favorite Jedi to desserts from the Dark Side.

Play LEGO Fortnite I Star Wars

Family game night just got more fun as with the arrival of Imperial and rebel fleets to LEGO Fortnite I Star Wars. This eagerly anticipated game that combines LEGO, Fortnite, and Star Wars and is part of a larger suite of Star Wars updates that has just been released to the wider Fortnite system. In this game, players can help their rebel friends survive by building up their village, face Imperial soldiers and stormtroopers, earn and wield their own Lightsaber, and craft all-new weapons to fight off foes. Indeed the Force and LEGO bricks are strong with Fortnite!

Add to Your LEGO® Star Wars™ Collection

LEGO® is celebrating the 25th year of Star Wars with brand new gift sets, gits with purchase, and more until May 5th on Lego.com. If you’re looking to add to your family’s collection, you can’t go wrong with classic Star Wars sets like AT-AT™ (75313), Millennium Falcon (75257), and Mos Eisley Cantina™ (75290).

Have R2D2 Make Your Popcorn for Movie Night

End Star Wars Day with a family movie night and popcorn made by your very own droid. The R2D2 Popcorn Popper from Williams-Sonoma makes movie nights more fun. Just plug him in, add corn kernels and watch as R2D2 makes quick work of air-popping a healthy snack for your next movie night.

Thanks so much for including CLOUDS IN SPACE: NEBULAE, STARDUST, AND US in your recommendations! Funny enough, I’m a big Star Wars fan but never thought to promote my book for the day…thank you for the great idea! Also, that R2D2 popcorn maker was the item I didn’t know I needed, but now I must have it. 😉

Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day Today we’re celebrating National Rescue Dog Day because we’re so glad Goldie and Murphy are part of our family! 🐶 We gave Goldie her forever home when she was 6 months old. She had been given up by her original family because she was just too much for them. She was an enthusiastic pup who loved to jump straight up in the air when she got excited and she used to hop the fence in the mornings to go visit her best dog friend, Katy, over our back fence. She still jumps from standing when she sees a deer, meets a favorite dog friend, or gets a visit from @lisatasch but now at age 5, she’s more calm and forever faithful. 🦮We met Murphy and his 9 brothers and sisters just days after he was born although we didn’t know he would be the puppy we’d claim as ours. Murphy has that puppy energy but in his quiet moments is a total love bug. He hogs the free space in our king bed (he even has his own pillow!) and loves nothing more than to press his body into me or lie directly on me. 🐾 Goldie and Murphy came to us through @labrescuelrcp and we couldn’t be happier that they’re part of our family! ❤️ #rescuedogday #labrescue #labrador #adoptdontshop
After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hos After 3 days at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, I’m leaving Memphis so very grateful to be able to support St. Jude’s mission of working to end childhood cancer. ❤️ Spending time connecting, brainstorming, and absorbing the wisdom of fellow Hero Ambassadors from around the country was inspiring because the work we do fundraising through our endurance events helps St. Jude do the incredible work they do to ensure families never receive a bill for their child’s treatment, housing, travel, or food and continue important research that will continue to reduce rates of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases. I am so looking forward to running in Memphis again this December! 🎉 If you’ve ever thought of running a race that does so much good in the world, join me! I’d love to have you come to Memphis and run with me! Or you can always donate through the fundraising link in my bio. ❤️ #stjude #stjudeheroes #memphis #stjudedmv

When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came wit When we bought our house 24 years ago, it came with many things we didn’t love like rotted porch boards, 1 bathroom, and peeling paint (inside and out!) but it also came with things we did love like old, mature trees, crazy shaped boxwood bushes, and these spectacular peonies! 🌸 Every year when they bloom I’m so glad that these beauties conveyed with the purchase of our house and I’m glad we rebuilt our porch so we can step out our front door to admire them in their glory! 🩷#peonies #peonyseason #garden #blooms #spring
As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the me As a teacher and parent, I am well aware of the mental health challenges our youth face and am really pleased to share that over the weekend I became certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing! 🎉 I’ve always worked to build relationships with the young people in my life- whether my kids’ friends or students- and this certification has made me more mindful of the signs and symptoms of mental health challenges so I can have important and supportive conversations when symptoms first start to appear. 🗣️A big component of the training also included developing a self-care plan which is critical when supporting others. 💕 I’m so grateful to have taken this certification for free through the University of Maryland whose blended learning format (2 hours of self paced online work + 5 hour instructor led class over Zoom) was fantastic! 💻 The teacher in me really applauds the course design and I’m glad to join the 3 million+ in the U.S. certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid. 🏥 If this is something you’re interested in doing, University of Maryland has free courses on Saturdays or Sundays from 10-4pm between June-October. Swipe ⬅️ for more information, including a QR code with more information and a survey to take as part of the sign up process. And if you have any questions- leave a comment or DM me. I’m happy to help you get certified too! ❤️ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthfirstaid #youthmentalhealth #mentalhealthawarenessmonth
