Ok social media mavens and teaching friends, this morning’s headline on CNN proclaims that Twitter has a place in the classroom.
8th grade teacher, Enrique Legaspi encourages students in his East Los Angeles classroom to BYOT- bring your own technology– or use classroom computers in their history class. In their study of World War I, students tweet at least 3 tweets of 140 characters with a specific hashtag as a way to answer questions from their text or responding to videos during class. The live stream is projected on a digital chalkboard.
The use of Twitter as a teaching tool has been said to have a positive impact on students who normally wouldn’t participate in class discussions. Legaspi also uses it to help inform his teaching.
I have a lot of thoughts on this but what do you think?
Is this paperless way of discussion appropriate for the classroom? What about the implications of Twitter as a teaching tool in regards to online safety? Thoughts on students bringing their own devices- smartphones, iPads, netbooks, laptops- to school?
